The Role:

The Executive Director Medical Services & Clinical Governance/Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will provide professional leadership and strategic policy and direction for the medical workforce of RCH. The CMO will lead clinical governance and quality initiatives for effective medical services, supporting high quality multidisciplinary health care being delivered across divisions of the RCH. The CMO will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and Chiefs of Medicine, Surgery and Critical Care as well as the Medical Staff Association on operational matters that support zero harm to patients and the safety of staff.

The CMO will have a clinical role that supports understanding of the practice reality and connectedness at the front line. Other key activities include management of conflict for the medical workforce, chairing key quality and safety committees, medical education, research, and recruitment and credentialing activities. Developing partnerships with other hospitals to support the clinical work of the RCH and liaison with relevant external agencies to ensure professional efficacy, will be key to success.

To be successful in this role you will have:



  • A Medical Degree and registration with the Medical Board of Victoria

  • Post graduate qualification in health, business or management

  • Extensive experience in a senior medical management position in a large, complex, multi-disciplinary healthcare organisation is essential

  • Experience in a relevant medical leadership position

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in leading and managing major change initiatives

  • Demonstrated success in advocacy, development and implementation of public health policies which engage the broader community

  • Understanding and demonstrated commitment to the role of research and education in clinical excellence

  • Understanding of industrial, legislative and regulatory requirements in healthcare

  • Effective information management capabilities
