The Australian Medical Students' Association National Leadership Development Seminar (NLDS) was held on May 20th-24th this year in Canberra.

NLDS saw 97 medical stualtdents from around Australia and New Zealand come together to to hear the different forms of leadership in practise, reflect, and begin the process of refining their own leadership styles. Not only that, delegates were then supplemented with practical tips to add to their repertoire through workshops. They were then encouraged implementation of these newfound skills into the small group projects, known as our Initiative Engineering. Teams were walked through the process of breaking down and identifying the root cause of a problem, followed by the creation of an initiative that could be implemented at a medical student level to help combat the issue. The final presentation occurred at the beautiful Old Parliament House, where delegates pitched their idea to a panel of esteemed specialists.

A highlight of the event was the Panel of Presidents of Medical Colleges, in which the Presidents of RACMA, RACS, RACP, RACGP and ACCRM came together on the theme of Leadership in Practice. Many topics were discussed, including pathways into medical leadership, barriers in achieving leadership positions, dealing with difficult situations as doctors and addressing systemic workforce issues.

Many thanks to RACMA and President Michael Cleary for their wholehearted support towards the development of medical leaders. We look forward to seeing a greater medical profession develop.
