Practical Leadership: A new leadership and development program for Clinicians in Tasmania Print E-mail
The Quarterly 2014

On July 4th 2014, RACMA launched a new professional development program designed specifically for Tasmanian Clinicians. Funded by the Australian Government, the Practical Leadership Series has been specifically developed for clinicians in part-time management and leadership roles in Tasmania, and focusses on supervision and management, clinical governance, quality and safety, finance, team building and communication.

The program was launched at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. Delegates were welcomed by RACMA president Dr Lee Gruner and RACMA Chief Executive Dr Karen Owen, with the keynote address delivered by Professor Chris Baggoley AO – Chief Medical Officer Australian Government. Professor Baggoley discussed the importance of working towards a sustainable health system for Tasmania, with local context also provided by Mr Graeme Houghton, Chair Tasmanian Health Organisations Council and Dr Lee Gruner. Delegates were given the opportunity to review the planned program and influence content by providing feedback about workshops, webinars and master classes.

The Practical Leadership Series features activities, information and tools for incorporation into current working practice. Sessions will be delivered by a variety of national and international speakers, expert medical educators, international medical academics and RACMA Fellows with the aim of sharing best practice on such diverse issues as rural work/life balance,  the maintenance and retention of rural workforces, and refugee and indigenous health issues.

A series of monthly webinars are scheduled from 24 July to 22 October, with a further two workshops focussing on open disclosure issues scheduled in August. The 2014 program will culminate with an International Master Class on leadership strategies for sustainable physician engagement on 12 November.
